Rouge Dior comes in two shades, and there’s a Prestige cream and serum pairing that would sit happily on any dressing table. Does it pique our interest?
Yes, and mostly because of the fragrance. Six scents make up a good share of the doors, and they gather the house’s best-loved names in one place. J’adore Eau de Parfum and J’adore Intense sit side by side, so you can wear the bright floral one morning and the deeper version that evening. Miss Dior comes as the Eau de Parfum and as Miss Dior Essence. Sauvage and Dior Homme bring the fresher, woodier end of the house. For anyone who has always wondered which Dior is theirs, this is a tidy way to find out before committing to a full bottle.
The makeup is the Dior you’d pick up first. Rouge Dior 999 is the house’s signature red, here in its velvet finish, and 720 Icône is a warmer everyday shade in satin. The Dior Addict trio covers the glossy end: Lip Glow for a sheer balm tint, Lip Maximizer for plump shine and Lip Glow Oil in between. Two Dior Vernis polishes, 999 and 513 J’adore, turn the red into a manicure. The Backstage Rosy Glow stick is an easy flush of colour that suits most skins, and it slips into a coat pocket.
The skincare is the quiet luxury. Dior Prestige La Crème is a rich rose-based cream, and its partner, La Micro-Huile de Rose Activated Serum, brings the same rose note into a serum. Capture Le Sérum is the house’s everyday serum, and La Mousse OFF/ON is a gentle foaming cleanser to start and end the routine. Four pieces make a small, complete ritual rather than a scattering of samples.
The design is the part people will keep. As luxury advent calendars go, this Dior beauty advent calendar is one to keep rather than flatten for the recycling in January. The star is embossed with the Montaigne façade, and the gingerbread scene in the middle is pretty enough to come out every December. Add the three ornaments and the Délice candle, and the calendar dresses the house as well as the dressing table.
What we’d change
We’d love more fragrance. The Dior perfume counter is huge, and six doors only scratch its surface. Four of the six come from just two families, J’adore and Miss Dior. We’d happily have seen Hypnotic Poison, Fahrenheit or a drop from La Collection Privée, the house’s more private perfume wardrobe, so dedicated Dior fans could find a scent they don’t already own.
Beyond lips and nails, the eyes have the two Diorshows and little else. A Diorshow eyeshadow or a liner would carry that couture feeling up the face. The lip edit is strong enough that we wouldn’t swap any of it out; we’d simply add.
