Does it pique our interest?
It does, and mostly because it reads like a routine rather than a sampler. Open it in the right order and you have the Round Lab 1025 Dokdo Cleanser to start, the SKIN1004 Centella Ampoule to soothe, Anua’s Zero-Cast sunscreen for the morning and the Laneige Water Sleeping Mask for the night. That is a complete, sensible K-beauty routine, and it arrives gift-wrapped in a bag, ready to hand over.
The brand list is the other draw. These are the names people seek out once they’ve fallen for Korean skincare, the ones that sell through and get restocked. Beauty of Joseon’s Revive Eye Serum, with ginseng and retinal, is a cult product in its own right. The ISNTREE GIM PDRN Firming Cream is the most forward-looking thing in the box, and a lovely thing to meet on a cold December morning, rich and cushioning without feeling heavy.
We also like where the full sizes have landed. The things you reach for every day — the 50ml sunscreen, the 55ml ampoule, the 30ml eye serum, the 50ml firming cream — come in sizes you’ll still be using well into the new year. The deluxe sizes are saved for the treats: a sleeping mask, a hyaluronic serum, a ceramide milk. That’s the right way round.
And the price matters here. At £50, this is a calendar you can buy on a whim, tuck into someone’s stocking, or use as a gentle first step into Korean skincare without committing to a full shelf of it.
What we’d change
Our reservations are small, and they’re mostly about balance.
The moisture sits a little heavy. Between the Haruharu Wonder ceramide cream, the ISNTREE firming cream, the Innisfree ceramide milk and the Laneige sleeping mask, four of the thirteen products do broadly the same comforting job. They’re all lovely, but one of them could have made way for an essence, the step that so many people come to K-beauty to try.
Two of the doors are single-use. The Medicube Zero Pore Pad and the Biodance sheet mask are one pad and one mask each — a very pleasant evening apiece, and then gone by morning. In a 12-day calendar every door carries a bit more weight, so we’d have loved one of them to be something that stays on the shelf.
