The brand list runs from salon names such as KMS, Goldwell and Philip Kingsley to bathroom-shelf staples like Bulldog, King C. Does it pique our interest?
It does, and mostly because of how far it reaches. Plenty of grooming sets stop at the bathroom cabinet. This one keeps going: a cleansing balm and an SPF moisturiser for the face, beard oil and a post-shave balm for the jaw, a matte clay and a dry spray wax for the hair, whitening strips for the teeth, then a magnesium spray and a muscle gel for the evening after a long run. Lay it all out on one table and you are looking at a routine that runs from the first rinse of the morning to lights out.
What we like best is that it refuses to settle for toiletries. The Philip Kingsley Overnight Scalp Barrier Serum is a properly considered thing to find in a grooming kit; scalp care is the step most routines skip, and this slips it in without any fuss. Beside it sit the Skincycles ExoYouth DNA Repair Cream, a generous 60ml of something rather luxurious, and the B. Men Anti-Aging Moisturiser SPF 30, exactly the kind of everyday essential people know they should use and rarely buy for themselves.
And there is plenty of it. Thirty products is a generous count for any calendar, and the sizes are made for using rather than for show: a 300ml KMS shampoo, a 250ml Mitchum spray, 150ml of Murdock London Beard Moisturiser, 56 Wellman tablets. This is a box that gets emptied, one satisfying bottle at a time.
What we’d change
Only two notes from us, and both come down to who ends up opening it.
The first chapter leans firmly towards the beard. The King C. Gillette Beard Oil, the Itch Relief Lotion and the Murdock London Beard Moisturiser are all written for facial hair, with the grüum post-shave balm alongside them. For a bearded recipient that is exactly the point. For someone who keeps a smooth jaw, the beard trio is the part most likely to be passed along to a friend.
We would also have loved a little more scent. The Better World Fragrance House Summer Mink rollerball is a lovely introduction, but at 3.5ml it is a taster rather than a signature: enough to discover whether it suits them, not quite enough to wear it all winter.
